by Jenn on March 8, 2010

I’ve been really busy at work lately, so I haven’t been posting much, as you’ve probably noticed.  Well, now I need to catch up on life at home, so it’s going to be another post-scarce week. My house is a disaster, and I’ve got to get it back in order before starting on any new projects.  Here’s a little something to hold you over until I get back….

Remember the vineyard prints I recently ordered from art.com?  I absolutely love them, but that doesn’t mean I need to have 2 copies of each.  Art.com accidentally duplicated my order and sent me another set of posters!

    kerne-erickson-santa-ynez-valley

    kerne-erickson-napa-valley

Rather than go through the hassle of returning them, I thought I’d offer them to you!  All you need to do is leave a comment (or email me by using the contact form in the navigation bar at the top of the page if you’d like to keep your story between us) telling me why you’d like to have one of these prints.

Please specify which one of the 18″ x 24″ posters you’d like – Napa or Santa Ynez.  I’ll choose 2 readers to receive a poster based on your story, so don’t be shy!  I’ll even pick up the tab for shipping.

I know these won’t appeal to everyone, but somebody out there is bound to like them, right? :)

    Shaklee Get Clean Giveaway!

by Jenn on March 1, 2010

I have a feeling I’m not alone when I admit that cleaning house isn’t exactly the first thing I want to do after a long day at work or during my precious free time on weekends.  Fortunately, there are plenty of cleaning solutions out there that help me save time and money.  I was so excited when my new internet friend Bonnie contacted me about a giveaway, because I’m always looking for ways to make cleaning easier, and I bet you are too!

Bonnie is a distributor for Shaklee (you can read about the company here), and also happens to be the cleanest and most organized person ever (check out her personal blog for proof!  She also has some great tips for cleaning).  I got the opportunity to try out some of Shaklee’s products, and let me tell you, they were amazing!

My favorite is the Basic H2 Organic Cleansing Concentrate.  This stuff is useful for everything!  A little goes a really long way, and the uses are infinite.

    basich2

The bottle lists different concentrations to mix with water for different uses, from window cleaner to oven degreaser to basic spray cleanser. I can’t believe I’m showing you this, but my gross oven probably had about 4.5 months worth of grease plastered to the bottom and door and the H2 worked beautifully to clean it right up.  Plus, no nasty chemical smell like those harsh oven cleaning sprays.

    grossoven

I use it on my tile floors, stainless appliances (no streaks, hooray!), and everywhere else I can think of.  I mix up a few different concentrations in different bottles, and instantly have multiple cleaners for multiple uses.  The best part is, it’s nontoxic so I feel good about using it in my kitchen.

My hubby LOVES the hand soap, he says it smells “clean”.  We also adore the fragrance-free laundry soap and handy disinfecting wipes for quick clean ups.

There are a ton of other incredible Shaklee products, but I’m going to let you tell me about them! To win a $30.00 product gift certificate to Bonnie’s online Shaklee store, plus free shipping, plus a lifetime membership ($19.95 value):

    1. Head over to Bonnie’s site and check out the Shaklee products she offers.
    2. Come back here and tell me which product you’d like to try out (bonus points if you share dirty secrets about your cleaning trouble spots so I don’t feel so bad about my terrible cleaning habits! :) )
    3. Get an extra entry for Facebook/Twitter/Blogging about this giveaway (please leave a link so I know to give you another entry)!

You’ve got until Sunday, 3/7 at midnight to enter, and the winner will be announced on Monday, 3/8.  Good luck!

    Folding Shelf Drying Racks

by Jenn on February 25, 2010

Welcome to our laundry room.  I call it the ‘laundry hall’ because it literally is nothing more than a hallway from the house to the garage.

    Picture 178_picnik

We use this entrance every day (only guests get to use the front door!), so it really functions more as a hall with a washer/dryer in it than a laundry room.  The problem is, there is no room for anything more than the basic washer and dryer, which makes it really hard to hang clothes to dry.  I hang dry most of my pants so they won’t shrink to become highwaters, so I really needed a place other than the backs of the kitchen chairs to hang wet clothes.  Enter my genius mom, who helped me come up with a set of drying racks that fit all my criteria: simple, out of the way, and sturdy enough to hold 8 pairs of wet jeans and a few shirts.

We started with a wire closet shelf from Target, added a few hardware accessories, and came up with these….

    Picture 177_picnik

First, we sawed the 3′ shelf into two pieces so they wouldn’t block the two doors on either end of the laundry hall.  I wanted to be able to open both doors without knocking them on the shelves.  Then we mounted them to the wall using the small mounting brackets they came with.

I wanted to be able to fold them flat against the wall when they weren’t being used, so we came up with a system for allowing them to fold up and down.  Small chains support the shelves when they’re in use, and a gate latch catches the shelf when I want to hold it up against the wall.  It’s really the cutest thing ever!  I can simply push the shelf upward until it reaches the latch, and it opens and closes around the edge of the shelf by itself.  It’s so easy to use, especially when you’ve got a pile of clothes in your arms.

    Picture 180_picnik

    Picture 181_picnik

We used heavy-duty wall hooks to hold the top of the chain, and attached the bottom to the shelf edges with mini caribeaners.  I spray painted all the accessories white to match the shelves, with the exception of the gate latches, since I didn’t want the paint to mess with their ability to move.

    Picture 182_picnik

    Picture 183

I couldn’t wait to do my laundry and try out the racks, which worked like a charm!  All of the hardware is rated for up to 100 lbs., so loading them up with heavy jeans shouldn’t be a problem.

    Picture 176

Then I fold them up until next time, flat against the wall and virtually invisible!

    Picture 179_picnik

It makes laundry just a liiiitle more fun, although I still hate doing it.  :)   I need to invent a way to make clothes fold themselves!

I’m sharing with Transformation Thursday, Met Monday, and TDC’s Before and After.

by Jenn on February 19, 2010

I’ve been MIA this week, because my mom’s here visiting from California!  If you think I’m creative, you should just see my mom in action.  The woman is a DIY GENIUS, and we’ve been hard at work this week.

    See?

Pretty soon this disaster zone will be the guest room again.  :)   I’ll be back next week with plenty to share!  Have a great weekend everybody!

    Pretty Pictures

by Jenn on February 11, 2010

Art.com is one of my favorite sites in the whole world!  I’ve always been really into art, and love to change out the displays in our house quite often.  It’s super easy too, when all you have to do is log on, pick one out, and have it shipped to your door.

Here’s what the UPS man brought to me yesterday:

    whimsical-butterflies-i

    Whimsical butterflies I

    whimsical-butterflies-ii

    Whimsical butterflies II

I’m not usually into such girlie art, but the vintage botanical look really caught my eye.  These are going to be perfect in our bedroom, especially with the new tablecloth curtains!  As I was checking out, these little beauties popped up on the sidebar:

    kerne-erickson-santa-ynez-valley

    Santa Ynez by Kerne Erickson

    kerne-erickson-napa-valley

    Napa Valley by Kerne Erickson

LOVE.  Santa Ynez is where our family vineyard is located, so I was ridiculously excited to see such a pretty print of my hometown.  Oh, and it was on sale for $0.98 from $29.99, so that didn’t hurt either.   :)   Since we have a bit of a casual Napa Style feel going on in our house, these prints will be right at home in the kitchen.

If you’re looking for a special piece of art to fill an empty frame, head on over to art.com and use the coupon code 4YOU257 to get 20% off!

    Everyday Bathroom Storage

    February 2, 2010

Our bathroom counters have been cluttered since the day we moved in.  The things we use every day sit out on the countertop, making me crazy!  I hate clutter, but putting away the curling iron, straightening iron, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and electric razor every time we use them would be a huge hassle.  In fact, it [...]

    (Affordable) Farmhouse Style

    January 27, 2010

You’ve probably seen the Pottery Barn catalog titled “Farmhouse Style”.  It’s full of awesome country-style accessories and decor, and I found myself drooling over all of the fresh, clean photos.

And you’ve probably seen the movie The Devil Wears Prada.  In one scene, her boss explains to Anne Hathaway that her “no-name” blue sweater was actually [...]
