  • DIY Stocking Hangers

by Jenn on December 8, 2009

Not wanting to put nail holes in our mantel, I decided to make my own stocking hangers this year.  It was pretty easy, and they can be customized to match any theme or decor!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own custom stocking hangers:

    • Ceramic tiles (3″ x 3″), available at hardware stores
    • Wooden letters from a craft store
    • Spray paint
    • Glitter
    • Wire coat hangers (2 coat hangers made 3 stocking hangers)
    • Wire cutters
    • Hot glue gun
    • Duct tape
    • White glue (Elmers or similar)
    • Medium sized beads

First, cut the hook off of the coat hanger.  Next, straighten and cut a length of wire about 9″.  Create a 90° bend at 3.5″, and bend the other end upward at 1″ from the end to create a hook.  Repeat the same steps to make as many hangers as you need.  They’ll look like this:

    Picture 055

Use a strong adhesive (Gorilla Glue or similar) to glue the 3.5″ area to the bottom of a tile, and secure with duct tape while it dries.

    Picture 060

    Picture 063

Hang the hooks over the edge of a counter – or washing machine, in my case – and allow them to dry.

    Picture 065

While the hooks dry, spray paint your letters – I used a deep berry red.  Once the letters are dry, paint a thin coat of white glue onto the letter face, and dust with glitter.  I splurged and bought Martha Stewart’s tinsel glitter in brownstone…it’s super shimmery and comes in tons of colors (about $5 per jar).

    Picture 066

Using a hot glue gun, glue a letter to the top of each tile, about 1/2″ from the front.

    Picture 069

Once it’s secure, turn the tile over and give it “feet” by adding a large dot of glue in each corner.  This stabilizes the holder and keeps it from teeter-tottering on the wire in the middle.

    Picture 073

Dab a tiny bit of glue onto the end of the hook and attach a bead of choice to finish off the hook.

    Picture 068

A last minute pointer:  the larger the tile, the more sturdy it is, so use bigger tiles for heavier stockings.  You can always disguise the tile with paint or a garland!

What a great, inexpensive idea! I think the stocking hangers at the stores are so stinkin’ expensive! And I love how you can customize these… using a word that has the same number of people in your family, or even using everyone’s initials. Awesome!

    Sandra December 8, 2009 at 10:28 am

I LOVE these. I don’t like our stocking hangars. There are 7 of us so I’ll make ours with the first initial. What a great idea! I won’t get them done for this year, but I”m going to put them on my to do list for next Christmas.

Can you come be my friend IRL? Kthankyouverymuch.

Seriously, though, this is a great idea. I recently thought about getting a giant unfinished wooden letter “D” for our last initial from the craft store and painting/gluing/doing something crafty to it and sticking it on our mantle. Oh, wait, WE DON’T HAVE A MANTLE. Yet. Got any fun ways to build one of those? I mean, while you’re on Christmas crafts, that is… 0:-)

Those look phenomenal! We had something similar, but my toddler just broke them when we put them out this year… so maybe I’ll have to DIY with your tips to replace them next year!

Wow! Your mantel is gorgeous! I admire crafty people like yourself, as I’m not so good in that department! I may give it a try though since you make it look so easy! Happy Holidays!

Those are so fantistic! So inventive! The little ball at the end of the wire gives it such a finished, professional look. Thank you for sharing this excellent project. It’s so much better than anything I’ve seen in stores. I’m a nut for that Martha Stewart glitter! It’s the best.

    beenomom December 17, 2009 at 9:53 am

Stopping by from SITS on your special day. What a crafty lady you are!! I wish I had half your talent! Amazing!! I will be following from now on to learn some ideas. Your step by step instructions and pics make it look easy. I just might be able to pull some of this stuff off!

    Katie December 17, 2009 at 10:41 am

    Kallay December 17, 2009 at 11:48 am

Beautiful! These totally don’t look homemade! Great ideas! I love that you even thought of putting “feet” on the tile! Eat your heart out Martha!

    Jessica December 17, 2009 at 12:14 pm

That looks awesome! I love them, but there’s no way I’d take the time to do them this close to Christmas…maybe next year!

    zeemaid December 17, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I have to admit I was completely skeptical when I first started reading this post… but OMgoodness you sooo totally rock with this idea. Your letters look amazing.

    Happy Feature SITS day

    Suzy December 17, 2009 at 12:53 pm

What a great idea, and might I add way more appealing than some of the ones in the stores!

    Paula December 17, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Love those! They turned out great!

    MeghanM December 17, 2009 at 2:17 pm

    OMG they look marvelous!

The Mom @ Babes in Hairland December 17, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Oh, that’s just the cutest idea. Ironically I bought those letters this year and painted them to have my girls hold for our family Christmas card! Might have to recycle them and turn them into something like that instead! :) Happy SITS day you.

    Michelle December 19, 2009 at 2:17 pm

You are so crafty. I am going to follow your blog. I am looking forward to seeing more of your great ideas.

    Liesal December 23, 2009 at 10:11 am

What a great idea! I’ve been trying to find something cute to use for stocking holders because the ones at the store seem so expensive and commercial looking.

P.S. I think we have the same washer and dryer! :)

That actually looks REALLY good. I particularly like your last photo of the display. Straight from a magazine…
